EDINBURG, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — The Edinburg Police Department is holding 48 illegal gaming machines widely known as 8-liners. This comes after the raid of a home on West Rogers Road last night. The home is secured by a ten-foot high fence.
Sixteen people were taken into custody, including three for being operators of the illegal activity.
"This is the first time our department has encountered any kind of investigation involving 8-liners," said Oscar Trevino of the Edinburg Police. "We have had illegal gambling investigations, but they really pertain to card games."
There have been several high profile busts of 8-liner operations in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. With more intense scrutiny there, perhaps the ring leaders see the Upper Valley as an opening.
"Our investigators have been able to obtain some information that strongly leads us to believe they are from the Cameron County area," Trevino said.
Unspecified thousands of dollars were taken from the Edinburg home. The home has been rented by the operators for just two months.
"We suspect they were renting that location for the specific purpose of holding this illegal gambling," Trevino said.
