BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — The City of Brownsville has been awarded $1.4 million from the Texas Department of Transportation for a new inter city bus service.
Express bus service will be available between Brownsville, South Padre Island, McAllen and other cities and is expected to be in service by September.
The grant award is part of the Federal Transit Administration's non-urbanized Area Formula Grant Program which provides states with funding for inter city bus service.
All three cities, Brownsville, South Padre Island and McAllen, partnered up with Valley Transit Company to utilize the funds to implement "Metro Connect" which with offer the service throughout the region.
Metro Connect will use transportation hubs in Brownsville's La Plaza station and McAllen's Central Station offering professionals and students with transportation options.
The grant will allow the acquisition of four buses. fund one year of operation and three bus lines: the green line connection, UTPA to McAllen, the red line connecting McAllen to Brownsville and the blue line connecting Brownsville to South Padre Island.
Planned hours of operation are Monday through Sunday from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
