EDINBURG, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — At approximately 1:32 AM Monday morning, Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department responded to a structure fire in the 7400 block of Puffin Street in Edinburg.
Firefighter's extinguished the blaze, however, the fire did claim the life of 19 year old Stephanie Gonzales. Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino says Gonzales was the only one home at the time of the fire.
"The origin of the fire definitely is suspicious," said Trevino. "The canines did detect there was an accelerant used, and there is evidence that this could have been a homicide."
The fire may have taken another life in addition to Gonzales. Whether or noth the victim was in fact pregnant at the time has yet to be confirmed by the sheriffs department.
"I know that there's rumors, things like that saying she might be pregnant...we will not know that for sure until we have our autopsy completed," Trevino said.
So far there have not been any suspects named. As the investigation of the fatal fire continues, the deputies of Hidalgo County are talking to Gonzales's family to gather more information.
"We are speaking with her family members, we are speaking with her husband and his brother, who was out of town when all this occurred, so we're on track," Trevino stated.
