The city of McAllen's public works department is getting hands on experience in case of a natural disaster like a hurricane.
On Friday crews from the public works department are built a 15-hundred foot berm.
They're also moved dirt at their composite site to improve the drainage area.
Public works director Carlos Sanches says working on large scale projects like this prepares workers to build structures that will help protect the city in events like a hurricane.
More than 150 employees participated in the project.
