MCALLEN, TX (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — It's that time of year again--tax free weekend kicks off on Friday and La Plaza Mall in McAllen is one of many Texas malls bracing for massive crowds.
With so many people expected to flood the stores this weekend, heightened security measures are being taken to ensure a safe shopping experience.
"The safety and security of our shoppers is our number one priority," said Isabel Rodriguez, director of marketing for La Plaza Mall.
"We prepare in advance just enough to accommodate the additional traffic that we are expecting this weekend."
With state taxes being withheld this weekend, shoppers get to pocket eight dollars in savings for every 100 dollars spent. That may not seem like a lot, but extra sales going on in many stores entice shoppers to come out in the crowds this weekend.
"You can see sales mall-wide ranging from 25 percent off to 50 percent off, so it's a great bargain on top of no sales tax," Rodriguez said.
These great prices bring out even greater crowds, but some shoppers are determined not to let the high flow of traffic interfere with their mission.
"I don't care about the crowds, all I care is what I want to get for school," said young shopper Eduardo Salinas.
Rodriguez says there are some tips for shoppers to keep in mind for a more efficient back to school experience.
"Look through your school's website and find out uniform requirements so that when you come to the mall you know exactly what you're looking for."
