BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — R-22 is one of the most popular air conditioning refrigerants used today. But since its main component, Chlorine, has been reported to deplete the ozone layer, the government wants people to use another refrigerant that's environmentally safe.
“The government’s really pressing for the eco-friendly stuff that doesn’t have any, uh, chlorine in it – it being that they’re mass producing this stuff now and the old stuff, they’re trying to stop the production. Uh, eventually, it’s gonna cease the year 2020.”
Because R-22 will be obsolete in the next seven years, the price of it has soared to $400 while the eco-friendly R-410A is only $80.
But many people will have to replace the whole AC system because the R-22 will not work with different pieces of equipment. This upgrade can cost up to $4000.
“Updating your coolants can be pricey, so officials at Texas Air Conditioning suggest that you get a routine maintenance check to make sure your air conditioning is working properly.”
“I would have done a preventative maintenance done to your equipment. Check and see if the efficiency is still there. Make sure the pressures are right, uh possibly get a quote.”
