HIDALGO COUNTY, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — A former Hidalgo County Sheriff's deputy has been found guilty this afternoon in McAllen Federal Court after a jury reached a guilty verdict, in the drug conspiracy case of Jorge Garza during an investigation of the Panama Unit case.
Garza was on trial for getting drugs by staging traffic stops against smugglers, confiscating the evidence, but then reselling it to other drug smugglers.
All the other law enforcement officers, who were swept up in the investigation and part of a special team, called the Panama Unit, pleaded guilty to their charges of drug activity.
Only Garza insisted on his right to a trial. He was not assigned directly to that Panama Unit, but heard the jury's guilty verdict this afternoon.
