BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — "This is unheard of nationwide. It's more efficient, quicker, faster, localized, more affordable."
The 35 percent reduction in tuition costs that Texas Southmost College is implementing is a far cry from the national trends we see. The overwhelming majority of students are in debt because of loans and the general cost of higher education.
"That's one of the reasons why I'm coming to TSC…because of it's cheaper, um, prices."
"Well I think it's very important to give people an opportunity to go back to school, people that haven't gone back to school for a while."
"I think it's great because it allows more students to come in and sign up and enroll and it'll be easier for them to afford the cost of coming to school."
"More students are going to be able to afford school which is a big need here in the Valley."
In struggling socio-economic places like the Valley, opportunities for higher education are not always tangible. So TSC's announcement for more affordable education is expected to create a ripple effect in the area.
"The tuition decrease at TSC will not only affect students and their families. It's also expected to have a huge impact on the local economy."
"The more we invest in higher education, and make it more affordable, we'll have more citizens of our community receiving a degree in higher education. Industry will want to come to where they have, what? A well qualified workforce, so therefore incomes will go up. And people paying more taxes are contributing more into the tax base so we all pay less."
