McAllen, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — The City of McAllen is reporting that it's unemployment rate, the lowest in the Valley and at the same time this year, increased.
The city's numbers reflect an overall increase trend in unemployment that most Texas cities are seeing. The state's unemployment rate for June was 6.9%, up from May's number of 6.5% and still Texas joblessness is lower now than a year ago of 7.5%.
In June, 56,807 people were employed in McAllen against 4,718 unemployed for its 7.7% rate.
Among cities in South Texas and the Valley, Corpus Christi had the lowest unemployment rate of 6.1%, Laredo with 7.2%, McAllen 7.7%, Edinburg at 8.2%, Harlingen and Mission at 8.5%, Pharr 10.7%, Brownsville 11.4% and Weslaco at 11.7%.
Education and health services lead all industries in employment with close to 60,000 jobs in the McAllen Metro area, followed by government and trade / transportation sectors.
