The difference between good carbs and bad carbs and why the healthy ones are good for us.
What do all of these foods have in common; beans, brown rice, fruits and vegetables. They're all good or healthy carbs and these foods: white bread, white rice, cakes and cookies. You guessed it, the so-called bad carbs.
Carbs are simply a string of sugars. Some are more complex than others and those sugars are broken down into glucose so that our body uses that for energy.
What is it the good carbs have that the bad don't. Plenty of natural fiber but little if any added sugar.
They are digested pretty slowly so they help to keep you full for a lot longer and they help to keep your blood sugar levels very even so you don't get hungry. And it also helps to regulate your mood as well.
Eating certain good carbs may also help lower our cholesterol and reduce the risk for diabetes. Don't fall pray to the no-carb or low carb diets.
Skipping carbs can sometimes leave you feeling fatigued, irritable and just overall tired. And you might find it hard to concentrate because carbs are important to help keep your brain going.
The US Department of Agriculture suggests adults get 45 to 65 percent of their daily calories from healthy carbohydrates.
So the next time you're out buying bread, reach for the whole grain instead of the white.
