“We are here cause we all love kids,” Driscoll Volunteer Dinocio Garza says.
Garza is one of about half a dozen volunteers who spends his days at Driscoll Children’s Clinic caring for little ones.
“We tend to the children to keep them busy while they’re waiting to see the doctor, that way we take their minds away that they’re going to see the doctor,” he said.
Garza has volunteered here for seven years. Most of the other volunteers also have quite a bit of experience under their belts, and while they may not get paid, Garza says they still get rewarded.
“It’s priceless,” said Garza. When we are here with the kids, and you see that they’re feeling sick or they’re feeling sad because of what they’re going through, you talk to them, you give them a toy and see that smile on their face; you go home happy that you were here.”
But it’s not all games, all the time. This week the volunteer crew is also working to set up for Driscoll’s big annual event, Christmas in July fundraiser. The event, held on July 18th, is an evening when community members and business donate toys for patient’s receiving treatment at the clinic.
In December, Santa himself will pass out the toys. For more on how you can help these volunteers make Christmas in July a success, visit our website at kveo.com
