SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — “I mean Fourth of July just has a special meaning. We got fireworks going on-actually special fireworks going on. We have that Friday, Saturday, the Fourth of July, so we have several days of fireworks. It’s just a special time. Kids are out of school, so it’s a primetime to travel, and of course the weather will be good so the place will be really jumpin’.”
There'll be an estimated 200,000 people on this thin strip of island - all of them ready to raise their spirits and open their wallets.
“The economic benefit is in every direction. I mean, it affects hotels, motels, condominium rentals, houses at rent. Uh, sales tax will be dramatically affected with, you know, store purchases. Liquor sales will be affected. So, each, fund-balance if you will, will be certainly affected and those funds are used for different projects, so it’s a very good economic benefit for the island because it affects everything.”
But in any public celebration, fun is fine, but safety is everything.
“Although there will be plenty of festivities on the island for people to celebrate Independence Day, accidents do happen. That’s why the fire department has a segment called Beach Patrol that will definitely be around in case of emergencies.”
“The Beach Patrol is here to save lives and you know, help everybody enjoy their weekend, enjoy their stay on the island. It’s self supporting and uh, they do a very, very good job in uh protecting the people on the beaches of the- of the island.”
