EDINBURG, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — A professor at the University of Texas-Pan American has the ear of President Barack Obama.
The Commander-in-Chief invited Dr. Karen Lozano to the White House this week. She was part of a small group of innovative immigrant business owners. Lozano teaches engineering at UTPA and started the company FiberRio. She invented a more efficient and affordable way to spin nano fibers.
These fibers can be a fraction of the width of a strand of human hair and can be used in many different industries. Lozano said getting the invite to Washington caught her off guard.
"The White House? Or a White House?" Lozano asked the person on the telephone last Friday night. "They said, 'no, we're calling from the White House.' Oh, okay. They said 'President Obama wants to meet with you on Monday at 2.' I was like, 'what?' They said, 'I know this sounds strange.' And I was like, 'yeah you have no idea how strange it sounds.'"
Lozano moved to the United States to go to graduate school at Rice University. There, she earned her master's and doctoral degrees in engineering.
