HIDALGO COUNTY, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — A new law in Hidalgo County woul drequire permits for folks selling anything on the side of the road. Currently, the Department of Transportation and each city makes its own rules.
Non-compliance could carry a $500 fine. Officials say the county just wants the vendors to stand a bit further back from the roadway for safety.
"We have a lot of issues with vendors setting up shop on county road right of ways," said Raul Sesin, the Hidalgo County planning administrator. "It becomes a safety issue. We're not prohibiting them from selling, we just want to make sure there are some orderly areas for those activities to take place. Safety for the traveling public is our main concern"
The law lacks many details until the county is finished working with the district attorney on the rules.
