Somali immigrant faces charges in daughter's death after treating burns with cocoa butter mixed with powdered acetaminophen.
(KPRC) The mother of an 11-month-old baby is facing charges after investigators say she caused the child's death after treating her severe burns with a home remedy.
According to court documents, Habibo Ibrahim told Houston, Texas investigators she came downstairs on March 5 and saw her daughter's pajamas were on fire. After putting out the fire, police say she treated the little girl's burns with cocoa butter mixed with powdered acetaminophen.
"I really don't believe she intended to do that," said Lareesa Gee, a neighbor who knows the family. "Coming from a different country sometimes they have to use home remedies because they don't have doctors like we are fortunate to have."
Gee and other neighbors said Ibrahim was often outside playing with her children and appeared to be a loving and caring mom.
Investigators say Ibrahim told them she was afraid to take the baby in for medical care.
Doctors say the child died of liver failure because of the high concentration of drugs in her system, but would have survived the burns if she had gotten proper medical treatment.
