BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — “We’re just not selling as much beef as we used to.”
The price of beef is increasing all across the country, and it's taking a toll both customers and employers like A&V Lopez Supermarket. But what's the reason behind why beef is becoming so expensive?
“The cost of beef is going up for a couple of reasons. One of ‘em is, uh, we’ve had a drought, so the feed is very expensive. There’s also a lot of, uh, beef that is being exported to other countries, so that costs us a shortage of beef and makes the price go up.”
These reasons don't make up for the increasing expenses customers have to pay for beef though. As a result, many people have considered other options."
“We’ve had several customers complain about the cost of beef, you know, having to pay a little bit more for, for their cuts. Uh, a lot of customers are switching from beef to pork and poultry because it is a little cheaper.”
We’ve changed more to chicken now, we don’t really buy that much beef. We buy it, like, less frequently.”
“There ain’t that much, ya know, money to be spent on, on like beef. We gotta go with, with chicken or pork or anything that’s a lot cheaper, ya know?”
But beef lovers are in luck. Experts say there will be brighter days ahead.
“Although the cost of beef has been steadily increasing over the last year and a half, officials say the cost is bound to go back down eventually.”
“The price of beef is like the price of gas. It goes up a big step, and then comes down a little step. So, the odds are it will come down, but not as much as it went up.”
