EDINBURG, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — A motion filed on Thursday in the case of the troubled former county district clerk Omar Lopez Guerrero will allow him to be out of court a little longer. On Thursday morning Guerrero wasn't present for his court date, authorities say it's no surprise.
Hidalgo County Criminal District Attorney René Guerra says, "I wasn't surprised Omar didn't show up in court today, I didn't expect him to, he didn't come in the last time, he tried to avoid prosecution."
Guerra says he personally knows the family and thinks Guerrero should do the right thing and turn himself in. "What ever consequences he will face he brought upon himself, not his family, his family is a good family." However, the family members, his father, sister, and another female we're all charged with two counts of hindering the apprehension of a fugitive.
Guerrero is still believed to be hiding out in Mexico somewhere. The former Hidalgo County Clerk was charged with tampering with the I.D of a weapon and cocaine possession, and a warrant was issued for his arrest for sexual assault of a minor.
Meanwhile, we tried to contact Guerrero's lawyer but as of news time he hasn't returned our calls.
