BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — 357th District Court Judge Oscar Garcia was appointed in Cameron County as a Republican by Governor Rick Perry. But, he just recently announced that he is changing parties and will run in the next election as a democrat.
"It's pretty clear to me that if I'm gonna give the people of Cameron County a fair opportunity to elect me if I'm doing a good job, that-that I need to be running the Democratic primary."
Cameron County is predominately Democratic, so it's likely that Judge Garcia will have the support of many citizens in the next election. But, his decision to change parties has several member of the GOP feeling less than thrilled.
"Frank Morris, whose the GOP chairman for Cameron County, said that he thinks it's a sad situation, that after Judge Garcia's been with the GOP for so many years, he's switching over to the Democratic Party. But, after hearing the news, Morris said that he's ready to continue with business as usual."
The judge did not seem overly concerned with how GOP members, like Governor Perry, felt about his decision. However, he did put his two cents in regarding how he will move forward.
"Well I can't begin to speak for the governor. What I can say is that my analysis of the interview process, is that the concern was to get a judge that would have integrity, be fair, and impartial to the people of Cameron County first and foremost."
