RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — Angelina Jolie's recent decision to have a preventative mastectomy, due to testing positive for the Braca gene, was a smart one, according to one Valley Oncologist.
He says it will reduce her chances of getting breast cancer by 90%, he also mentions, women do have other options though, Oncologist Dr. Todd Shenkenberg, "Well the other thing women can do in that situation is take the drug tamoxifin, which is an estrogen blocker and that reduces your cancer by 50%."
Dr. Shenkenberg adds the Braca gene is not common in the Valley, but when a woman does test positive for it, they usually opt for the drug rather than the preventative mastectomy.
