BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Strokes - these often life threatening blood clots in your brain are far more prevalent than most people are aware of. They can also alter your life in the most drastic way. Dr. Ameer Hassan explains why it's so important for people to be informed about strokes:
"So May is National Stroke Awareness Month and the key messages out there are that stroke is the fourth leading cause of death, it's the first - it's the number one cause of disability in the world, and basically every 40 seconds someone has a stroke."
Often times, stroke are recognized by sudden dizziness, confusion, slurred speech, or numbness of the limbs. Normally, waiting to go to a hospital for more than three or four hours after a stroke can be debilitating or even deadly. But if you live in the Rio Grande Valley, you're lucky to be within driving distance of Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. It's one of the only hospitals in the state of Texas with the latest stroke technology:
"With the new equipment Dr. Hassan uses in this bi-plane room, he can now extend stroke treatments from a three hour window up to a 24-hour window."
"If you come to Valley Baptist Medical Center, we are a comprehensive neuroscience center, we can advance, um-we can extend the time window...we can treat wake-up strokes or unknown onset time using image guided therapy."
This endovascular equipment allows neurologists like Dr. Hassan to go into the blood vessel and take out the clot or hit the clot directly with a clot-busting drug.
