McAllen, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Teachers and librarians have a new way of getting kids to read by getting middle school students in the McAllen ISD competed in a quiz tournament on Monday.
Teams from seven middle schools took part with questions coming from books the students read.
Fossum Middle School Principal Paz Elizondo says they'll do whatever it takes to get kids to open up a book, "The kids have really enjoyed it, it's really promoted that friendly competition within our school district and kids are more excited about the certain novels that they had to read. We know that literacy is the foundation for student achievement, it's just another way of promoting our students to become more engaged as lifelong learners for reading."
School district officials say it's been such a success they're going to bring the quiz back next year.
