EDINBURG, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — On Monday hundreds of officers and family members gathered at the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department to remember those officers who were killed while they were on duty.
It was a moment to remember those special heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice and to also remember those who currently keep us safe.
Sheriff Lupe Treviño says, "But also to honor those who are still working and going to a 24-hour shift because a lot of times you just don't know if they are going to make it back."
So, this week, "National Police Week" is a reminder of what these service men and women do for us.
Nearly 30 years-ago Hortencia Segovia lost her son, he was killed in the line of duty. For Segovia this day, holds a large significance.
She says, "I'm thankful they're not forgotten, it is something we are really proud of."
During Monday's Fallen Heroes ceremony their was a special roll call, for some even an emotional moment!
The Sheriff's Department says it's important they receive special recognition and that they're never forgotten and expressed gratitude for their sacrifices and for allowing to keep us safe.
During the ceremony Sheriff Lupe Trevino also got a chance to speak with family members who lost loved ones in the line of duty.
