PALMVIEW, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — Palmview's Felipe Valencia didn't know his shotput throw at the regional track meet last weekend would land him a top ranking.
"I really didn't think it was going to go far until everybody started screaming," Valencia said.
The junior's 62 foot throw is the best in the state this year. He walked away with a second place finish at the state tournament a year ago. This year's tournament begins Friday and Valencia is ready to handle the pressure.
"Going as number one, it's a big target, so I'm ready to compete," he said.
Felipe was expected to qualify for the state meet in discus as well, but he scratched all three times, meaning none of his throws counted. But what it did was provide fuel for the best throw of his life.
"I've never scratched all my throws, that really motivated me," Valencia said. "A little anger came out of me."
"I saw his lowest moment and his highest moment at the same time," said his coach Sebastian Duque. "Knowing that he did as bad as he did in the discus, and 30 minutes later stepping up and doing his best in the shot put ever, that to me was, I saw a young man grow into a man."
