BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Most women don't have any problems packing on the pounds during pregnancy.
Local OBGYN Dr. Flores said that weight gain during pregnancy is dependent on a woman's body mass index. The ideal BMI is between 18 and 24.
"You're ideal weight gain during pregnancy should be between 28...if you're at your ideal weight, it's between 28 and 30 pounds."
Dr. Guajardo, an OBGYN at Valley Region Medical Center, says that there are no real weight gain trends among pregnant women in the Rio Grande Valley. He did note that exercise and staying active are important during a woman's pregnancy.
"You can do things that are reasonable, like walking, or jogging, or even swimming, cycling. I don't want to put them at risk or have them engage in any kind of activity that might put them at risk of falling or having an accident or what have you."
"If you're pregnant and trying to get some exercise in by taking a quick dip in the pool or you're looking to do something a little more adrenaline-pumping, just remember to keep it in moderation."
For those new moms who want their bodies to bounce back to its original state post-pregnancy, both doctors warn to wait at least six to eight weeks before engaging in strenuous, physical exercise.
Maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle for 40 weeks, a typical pregnancy, is highly recommended.
