MCALLEN, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — For the first time ever the City of McAllen will host a Marathon called the McAllen marathon. On Wednesday city leaders along with sponsors met with local media to announce the upcoming event.
McAllen Assistant City Manager Wendy Smith says, "To announce the inaugural marathon on December 15th it's the replacement to the international friendship run which was such a huge success in McAllen for 26-years."
Following the devastating explosions in Boston many are still deeply touched from the tragedy, but for some runners they want to act with courage and pride, so they say this upcoming marathon has a large significance. Michelle Crane is an avid runner, she says, "You can't be fearful we live in a great state, we live in a great community, we can't let one traumatic event bring us down."
Crane thinks this marathon is something good for the city. Crane says, "As a runner I'm elated that McAllen is hosting this marathon, you know we have the opportunity to come together there is a really large running community in McAllen and for McAllen to host something locally is not only great for our runners but for the community."
The City of McAllen says they will take extra steps to ensure runners, volunteers, and the community remain safe during the event.
