BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — He's one of the most educated cardiologists in the country.
His nine board certifications are proof of that.
News Center 23's Na'Tassia Finley introduces Dr. Fadi Alfayoumi, our feature in this week's People with a Passion report.
Four years of undergrad school, plus four years of med school, plus eight additional years of medical training, equals nine board certifications and a lot of passion; passion for his patients, passion for education.
But for Dr. Fadi, the diplomas on the wall are only a small part. It was the journey to get to here, to get to the point of being one of the most educated cardiologist in the country that means the most.
From the time he was little, he says he closely watched his father, an endocrinologist, and other family friends.
"One of our friends was a cardiologist and he took care of my mom and I saw the ultrasound of my mom's heartbeat and it clicked in my mind right then that I wanted to be a cardiologist," said Dr. Fadi Alfayoumi.
But this dream initially proved difficult. He graduated at the top of his med school class at just 23 and was ready to help heal hearts, but his nationality held him back. Being a Palestinian in Jordan meant his chances of getting into a hospital were slim; only natural citizens were given those positions.
"My dad told me you need to go to America, because in America, everybody gets a chance,” said Dr. Fadi.
And in 2006, after additional training in the US, he chose Brownsville. A location where he says he could make an immediate impact for people who don't have much.
"With passion, with belief you can have what you want," said Dr. Fadi.
