RIO GRANDE VALLEY (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — This year alone the Guatemalan council in McAllen says Border Patrol has apprehended 5,000 Guatemalans trying to get into the US illegally through the Rio Grande Valley sector, last years numbers totaled around 12,000.
Alba Cacerez is the council of Guatemala in McAllen. She says some are not so lucky and end up deceased on the trek.
"Last year we found 39 dead people in the Falfarius area in the Rio Grande Area,
that was last year, but now we have 15 bodies just in this 3 or 4 months." said Cacerez.
On a daily basis Cacerez says she hears the horror stories these people go through.
"Sometimes the woman suffer violations and the little kids die" said Cacerez.
Cacerez says Guatemalans will pay big bucks to take to the risk to get into the United States illegally paying $5,000-$6,000, even $10,000 dollars for their children.
Cacerez says sometimes the illegal immigrants don't have any enough money to pay in cash and will give the smugglers their houses.
Border patrol spokesperson Henry Mendiola says the risk is not worth it.
"They are just a commodity to these smugglers, they are only money to them, they need to think twice before they come in illegally and take these risks." Said Mendiola.
