HARLINGEN, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — A Harlingen mother left her two children and two nieces, unsupervised, at a local Walmart on Thursday night for over three hours.
Police were called to a Walmart store at approximately 1:45 a.m. on Friday in response to a possible child abandonment report.
Upon arrival, police made contact with four children, a 2 years-old, a 5 years-old, a 9 years-old and a 14 year-old, outside the store. Through their questioning, officers found out that the two youngest children's mother was Kelly Lee Gonzales and she was the aunt to the two oldest children.
Gonzales had taken all four children to the store around 9 p.m., Thursday, and returned back to work believing that another family member would be picking up the children at the store. Gonzales was told that the 14 year-old had made several attempts to contact her for help with no success.
Police arrested Gonzales and charged her with four counts of abandoning endangering child with intent to return and the children were released to a family member and Child Protective Services was contacted.
Gonzales was given a bail of $10,000.
