Palmview, TX (KVEO News Center 23) — Senior Sandra Munoz is on the Palmview High School women's wrestling team. But wrestling was not always her sport of choice.
"Because in my family, basketball was it. There was no wrestling, wrestling wasn't a girls sport," said Sandra Munoz, Palmview High School wrestler.
But after a year of encouragement to join the team from a coach, Munoz decided to give wrestling a try. She said after her first go, she's never looked back.
"Wrestling is my passion because it is one of those sports that is just you and only. It pushes you, and you are able to compete on your own, yes you practice with your teammates, but once you are in there, it's you and your opponent and that's it," said Munoz.
After playing years of team sports, Munoz found her true stride at being an individual on the mat. And after just two years, she was able to go to the UIL Texas State Women's Wrestling Championship. But the competition didn't work out as planned. She lost in the first round; a loss that changed her mindset.
"My determination was to get back to state, at least place in the top six. And getting their was tough, I just kept thinking you lost last year, are you going to lose this year, no," said Munoz.
And she didn't lose. At the end of the tournament, Munoz took a place on the podium.
"I placed third place," said Munoz.
It is an accomplishment she can carry with her for the rest of her life.
