PHARR, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — At one point the PSJA Independent School District had one of the worst graduation rates in the state, but within past years they have turned it around. Presently the school district is one of the most successful school districts when it comes to high school graduation in Texas.
On Monday U.S. Congressman Ruben Hinojosa met with school district leaders from Seguin ISD to explain PSJA ISD's sucess with high school graduation.
Hinojosa says, "To see this model program that Doctor Daniel King, superintendent and his school board and his wonderful administrators have put together, which has been successful."
Within past years PSJA ISD went from a nearly 80% dropout rate to a now successful 60% graduation rate.
Patti Verduzco dropped out of high school her sophomore year, a few years later she went back to obtain her diploma because she saw the importance of education.
Verduzco says, "In my case i did drop out, but then I went back because I realized just how important education is and how much you need education to get further in life. "
Meanwhile, teachers and leaders at PSJA ISD say it's about instilling the significance of an education and also giving their students a head start, which is precisely what PSJA Thomas Jefferson T-STEM Early College High School provides their students.
PSJA Thomas Jefferson T-STEM Early College High School provides students the opportunity to receive college credit and even obtain associate degrees while they are in high school.
