BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — This is event is called Cyclobia. On Sunday St. Patrick’s day the City of Brownsville will shut down three and half miles of streets for people to get out and exercise.
"Whether it’s walking, running, skating, or walking the dogs this is the second time we are doing this event and the police department is excited to be part of this event." said Police Chief Orlando Rodriguez.
Brownsville Commissioner Dr. Rose Cowan promotes events like this one and encourages people to get out and exercise.
Brownsville has very high obesity rates, in fact one in three people in Brownsville are obese.
"We are committed to make a difference and provide these opportunities like open streets so people have the ability to get out and be active in a safe way." said Cowan.
There will be a 5k run at 8:30 a.m. followed by the Cycoblia which starts at 10 a.m.
Brownsville police want to assure people this is a safe event for everyone as they will have officers throughout the three and half miles of blocked off streets.
