SAN BENITO, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — A driver with thousands in outstanding traffic fines led police on a high speed chase early Monday morning.
At 2:19 a.m., officers were called to the 800 block of Franklin Street about a fight in progress. When the officer arrived at the location, he noticed a white Chevy HHR leaving the area at a high rate of speed and began chasing the vehicle.
A second officer assisted in the chase and saw a woman momentarily hanging out of the back passenger door as the driver continued to speed down South Frontage Road.
The car came to stop at a home on the 200 block of E. Robertson where two men ran from the vehicle leaving the woman to be questioned by police.
One of the men, identified as Javier Rios, 20, ran into the house of Reynaldo Hernandez, 43, who refused to let police search the home. Officers called out to Rios to exit the home and noticed an open window and a nearby abandoned house.
Police searched the vacant home and found Rios pretending to be asleep and were able to handcuff him after a brief struggle. Rios had over $4,000 in outstanding traffic fines.
Hernandez was arrested for hindering apprehension or prosecution. His bail was set at $10,000.
Rios was taken into custody and charged with several traffic warrants, evading arrest in a motor vehicle, two counts of evading arrest on foot and resisting arrest. His bail was set at $45,000.
Both men were arraigned by Judge Benjamin Yudesis.
