SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — South Padre Island’s new Public Works Director Marcy Newman brings vast experience and a personal investment to her new position.
A Texas Professional Engineer with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University, and 31 years of experience in transportation improvement, Newman is well positioned to have a positive impact on the Island. While working for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in Fort Worth and then in the private sector, she developed a strong working relationship with the local TxDOT office. She’s also been involved in all areas of public works, from design to construction and traffic operations.
“My goal is to improve infrastructure to improve the quality of life for everyone,” said Newman. “Improved infrastructure attracts tourism, retirees and makes the community more livable for everyone.”
Newman speaks as a City employee and as a local. A weekly commute to Dallas and Austin for work didn’t stop her from taking permanent residence here. She became a full-time resident five years ago and has owned property on South Padre Island since 2003. Driving the streets of the Island and being a part of the community makes Newman more knowledgeable of the City’s needs.
“I understand a lot of the issues,” she said. “I live with the issues, whether it’s the visitor seasons or the traffic.” In addition, being a local means Newman sees her position with the City as more than a paycheck. “I’m not just here for a job,” says Newman. “It’s my home, so I’m committed to seeing it improve.”
