HARLINGEN, TEXAS (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — Within 90 minutes, police caught eighteen pedestrians crossing railroad tracks illegally on Monday morning.
The police department and Union Pacific Crossing Accident Enforcement and Safety program worked together to promote railroad safety to emphasis the importance of safety. Harlingen police officer Salvador Carmona stated on the enforcement, "A lot of the things we want to bring up to the public was, you cannot stop or park on a railroad track, whether the gates are up or down and the lights are flashing or not. For the simple fact that if a train comes, you could have an accident."
Officers suggest that people always look to see if a train is approaching and to always remember that trains have the right of way.
