Houston, TX (KVEO Newscenter 23) — "It was so emotional I went through Hurricane Ike 17 days without power and it didn't even compare to emotional rollercoaster this has been." said Heather Holloway.
Heather Holloway is from Houston. It was supposed to be a fun trip for her, her sister, brother in law, and her niece. They were celebrating her brother in law just getting out of the army.
But it quickly turned into chaos on Sunday when an engine-room fire started and left the ship powerless.
"For my family it was a nightmare, our rooms were one of the rooms that flooded with sewage, we had to move into the lobby."
Holloway says they were sleeping on mattresses on floor and one of the most challenging tasks was trying to go to the bathroom.
"You had to used a red bag, sometimes when the downstairs bathroom wasn't working they would give you a small trash can with a bag in it, and you went to the bathroom in it, or we would go in our rooms, I mean you lost all dignity."
Holloway says people were not being provided the basic necessities.
"They didn't have medication, there were kids that had ear infections and they coud not do anything for them, babies didn't have formula it was just terrible."
When it came to food Holloway says can’t eat seafood which became a big problem.
"For me it got to the point where I couldn’t eat anything because the servers on the food line didn’t know what was in the food and everything was cross contaminated so I was just living off cereal and fruit."
The nightmare didn't stop there, finally when they made it back to shore in Alabama Holloway then had to take an 8 hour bus ride to Houston where she finally reunited with her family.
"I cried a lot of tears of happiness so surreal being back it will be awhile before I am around a large group of people because we stuck in the lobby so long just seeing my family it made me so happy."
Holloway says despite the nightmare she will take a cruise again, the next time she says it will not be with Carnival.
