The sounds of gunfire that rang through Four Peaks Elementary School on Saturday did not come from a gunman.
The pops, cracks and booms emanating from the abandoned Fountain Hills school were from assault rifles and handguns firing fake rounds known as "simunitions" and were part of a posse-training event put on by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
In one exercise, starting about 2:30 p.m., an armed man wearing an olive-green trench coat and carrying a mock assault rifle walked through the parking lot toward the school's front entrance.
Posse members drove up in two marked vehicles with lights flashing, got out and approached the man with what looked like rifles and handguns.
