San Benito, TX(KVEO Newscenter 23) — It was at the end of the school day at Sullivan Elementary on Monday when the San Benito school district says a 7 year old first grade girl was waiting for her mom.
"The girl passed out as her mom came to pick her up, she went into medically I am not sure I would call it a coma, but close to that at the time she was picked up." said San Benito CISD Attorney Kevin O'Hanlon.
The school’s attorney says a nurse at the school tried treating the unresponsive girl until paramedics arrived. From there the 7 year old was taken to hospital where she never recovered and died Monday evening.
The school district is working with the San Benito Police Department.
Police say preliminary autopsy reports show the cause of death was asphyxia due to a balloon blocking her airway.
Police say they are working to find out where the balloon came from.
"The school district does have councilors inside the elementary for students, staff, and faculty that are having a difficult time coping with the loss of this young life."
San Benito CISD superintendent Antonio Limón issued this statement.
"We extend our most sincere and deepest condolences to the child's family, and ask that you keep them in your prayers."
Angel Vasquez Jr is a parent who lives right by Sullivan Elementary.
He has a 7 year old niece and a four month year old child.
"You drop your kid off at school hoping for the best, just to get an education on life, there is their kid years and you don’t have that anymore, you lose a child, if I were to lose my child or my niece it would be heartbreaking as a parent I feel what the parents are going through and it’s heart breaking and my prayers go out to them."
The school district says family members of the girl have set up a bank account to assist the family with funeral expenses.
