EDINBURG, TEXAS (NEWS CENTER 23) — U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Rio Grande Valley Sector seized more than $7.3 million worth of marijuana and rescued five people over the past four days.
Agents assigned to the Falfurrias Checkpoint rescued five men, who are nationals of Mexico, from a cargo trailer Saturday evening. The men were found during an inspection at the checkpoint. The men were sweating profusely when agents discovered them in the trailer which had no ventilation and no means of escape. The illegal immigrants were offered medical assistance and will be processed for return to Mexico. Earlier that day near Falfurrias, the remains of an illegal immigrant were discovered on a ranch.
One of the largest marijuana seizures occurred Friday near Salineño when agents saw several people loading bundles of marijuana into a van on the banks of the Rio Grande. As agents approached the vehicle, the smugglers fled and crossed the river into Mexico – leaving behind nearly 1,200 pounds of marijuana.
Agents assigned to the Rio Grande City Station made another large seizure near Garceno. The agents were working in the area when they saw a Toyota sport utility vehicle traveling north from the river. When the driver of the vehicle spotted the agents he made an abrupt turn and headed back toward the river. Near the river, the driver abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Agents arrested the driver and seized more than 1,100 pounds of marijuana.
Several additional seizures pushed the total amount of marijuana confiscated from Thursday through Sunday to more than 9,100 pounds.
Additionally on Thursday, agents assigned to the McAllen Station apprehended a mother and daughter, who are both Russian nationals, near Mission. During an interview, the daughter said she had been raped numerous times at a house in the United States while being held against her will. The pair said they had escaped the stash house and were fleeing from the smugglers.
