HIDALGO CITY, TEXAS (NEWS CENTER 23) — Naming a “Border Texan of the Year” is a proud tradition of BorderFest, South Texas’ oldest and largest music, culture, and heritage festival, which takes place annually in Hidalgo, Texas.
Every year, BorderFest recognizes an individual that has contributed greatly to the South Texas region. This year, the Border Texan of the Year Committee has named Sam L. Susser as BorderFest’s Border Texan of the Year. Mr. Susser joins the ranks of past distinguished honorees including then-Governor George W. Bush, Governor Rick Perry, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, State Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa and Charles Butt to name but a few.
A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Mr. Susser is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Susser Holdings Corporation, a third-generation family-led business. Mr. Susser currently operates over 550 retail convenience stores under the Stripes® banner. Among the many distinguished leadership positions he holds, Mr. Susser is currently a member of the Advisory Board of the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas and a Trustee and Chairman of the Driscoll Foundation, which owns the Driscoll Children's Hospital System in South Texas. In 2009, Mr. Susser was admitted to the Texas Business Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Catherine, have one daughter and two sons.
Mr. Susser will be recognized at BorderFest’s Border Texan of the Year dinner on the evening of Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013. All proceeds from the benefit dinner are designated for the scholarship fund of the recipient’s choice. In its 23-year history, this event has raised over half a million dollars for deserving students in the Rio Grande Valley.
