AUSTIN, TEXAS (KVEO NEWSCENTER 23) — Senator Judith Zaffiniri and Rep. Tom Craddick have filed legislation which would ban texting while operating a motor vehicle. Rep. Eddie Lucio III filed similar legislation and will has signed on as a joint author to HB 63.
"Ensuring the safety of our loved ones is a paramount issue. The texting and driving ban will prevent the fatal accidents too many families have experienced." said Rep. Lucio. "Rep. Craddick and I both hold this issue as a top priority, which is why I have decided to sign on as a joint author of his bill."
Senator Zaffirini along with Rep. Craddick will hold a briefing in which Rep. Lucio, other lawmakers, staff, and media are invited to attend regarding the proposed texting while driving laws. AT&T will also have a texting and driving simulator set up at the Capitol.
"HB 63 & SB 28 would make it illegal to drive and text at the same time, however, it does not ban cell phone use completely," said Rep. Lucio. "Tuesday's briefing will get the message out about the dangers of texting and driving and allow some of the families touched by these tragic accidents to share their experiences."
The briefing is scheduled for Tuesday January 29, 2013 in the Capitol Extension Room E2.036. Attendance to the briefing is open to the public.
