RIO GRANDE VALLEY (NEWS CENTER 23) — Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta stated the decision to lift combat restrictions on women "simply reflects a new reality" since more than 280,000 American women military personnel have already served in Afghanistan and Iraq and plenty of local residents. Still unknown is what effect, if any, this new edict will have on military recruiting.
