BROWNSVILLE — It's been less than two weeks since a 27 year old marine veteran finally gained his freedom and returned to the United States after he was locked up in a Mexican prison last August. Jon Hammar was attempting to drive through Mexico on his way to a surfing vacation in Costa Rica when he was arrested. Allegedly for transporting a banned weapon into the country. Hammar says it was a family-owned antique shotgun that he declared at the border and had been assured by American officials would be perfectly legal in Mexico. Nevertheless, Hammar spent more than four months in a prison near Matamoros, Mexico before his lawyer and U.S. authorities finally secured his release the night of December 21st. After two weeks of silence... Hammar's father also named Jon Hammar spoke with Newscenter 23 by telephone from his home near Miami, Florida.
