MCALLEN - For 22-year-old Jazmin Hernandez the birth of her new baby girl was the best surprise she received for the New Year. Hernandez says, "I was actually shopping in the mall with my mother, daughter, and son, I had contractions, but they were not strong." But those contractions kept getting stronger, so for Hernandez it was an early delivery.
The baby was born at McAllen Medical Center and weighed seven pounds and nine ounces. This is the mom's fourth child. Hernandez says she is grateful and very happy that her daughter was born is with good health.
Meanwhile, Hernandez's baby wasn't the only baby born on New Year's Day in the RGV. According to reports another parent gave birth at 12:01 a.m. at Doctor's Hospital at Renaissance in Edinburg.
Hernandez hasn't decided on a name yet, she wants an extra special name, since her child was born on such a special day.
