HIDALGO COUNTY - It's a campaign to help reduce the amount of life threatening situations involving those attempting to cross the border illegally. On Friday the Rio Grande Valley Sector of the U.S. Border Patrol, along with a local law enforcement agency hosted a border safety initiative conference to push for safety along the borders.
Many of those deaths include victims of human smuggling, but the sad part is that those smugglers continue to cross people illegally putting many lives in danger.
For the law enforcement agencies, EMT, and border patrol that means looking out for the safety of everyone regardless of their legal status.
Meanwhile, as more and more dangers take place through the border, the C-P-B asks the public to step in and help. They ask the public to call the Rio Grande Valley Sector toll free at 1-800-863-9382 if they see any illegal or suspicious activity.
U.S. Border Patrol says it's important to inform the public about the dangers of crossing the border illegally and they also emphasize they plan to work with other departments as teams to help decrease the number of deaths.
