BROWNSVILLE — The Gladys Porter Zoo flipped the switch on a new green project of solar array panels that will help save money on electrical cost in the future. There were 121 felxlight solar panels installed on top of the newly built South Texas Discovery Center which will house classrooms and other educational resources. Zoo Director Larry Birchfield stated that the zoo has many other green projects in the works, "We want all of our future facilities to be as energy efficient as possible, we want the zoo to be an example for the community." Over the course of it's lifetime, the solar installation is expected to save the zoo nearly half a million dollars. That money will go toward educational efforts and Green Mountain Energy which provided the panels.
