MCALLEN - You may drink it if you are watching your weight, but new research suggests drinking too much diet soda can be hazardous to your health.
A new study conducted by the University of Miami School of Medicine took more than 2500 people for nine years and found that those who drank diet soda everyday had a 61% higher risk of vascular events, including a stroke or a heart attack than those that didn't consume diet soda.
The study shows that the caramel coloring inside can cause heart risks or strokes. On the other hand, some say they are not ready to give up diet drinks and believe the study is too preliminary.
Family Practitioner and Anti Aging Specialist; Doctor Yvonne Bracamontes of McAllen says it's always a good idea to try alternatives like water or even mix apple and orange juices together with water to dilute the sugars, that way you are still getting the sweet taste but with out all the chemicals.
Meanwhile, medical experts say that people with high risk factors for vascular disease, might want to reduce the amount of diet soda they consume.
