HARLINGEN — Governor Rick Perry visited Texas State Technical College on Tuesday to announce the new Skilled Workplace Initiative program which will work with the school, the Governor's office and the Texas Workforce to help individuals get certified for manufacturing jobs. The program will help veterans, displaced workers and high school graduates to attain a technical certification in a timely manner and at a affordable cost. Once they have completed the program they will be ready to be employed in manufacturing jobs in the business sector which is in high demand. Governor Perry stated, "Many of these candidates already have specialized training and very valuable real world experience in these fields, but they lack certification. Competency based learning, that is awarding the credit for those skills and experiences and dramatically cuts down the time needed for certification and minimizes the cost by not forcing those candidates to sit through courses they already know for instances."
