Scientists at the National Institutes of Health say they were watching the NBC program and saw an opportunity: a ready-made group of test subjects, trying to lose a lot of weight, who would be closely monitored from start to finish.
From there they were able to see whether the Biggest Loser lifestyle could really be achieved off the show, in real life.
