HIDALGO COUNTY - No more chances for child support offenders in Hidalgo County. The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Department and the Texas Attorney General are rounding up a list of 64 people.
"There's hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands of parents that are on the deadbeat list. But the Attorney Generals office, who actually did the research, picked out who they thought were the most notorious," said Sheriff Lupe Trevino, Hidalgo County.
But what makes one child support offender more notorious than the other?
"The parents that are being pursued in the round up have been given many opportunities to pay their support. They are in violation of court orders that require them to pay and they must be held accountable," said Janece Rolfe, TX Attorney General Communication Manager.
The amounts owed by some of these parents in Hidalgo County are astronomical. When scanning the list, the amounts range between $1,000 to over $100,000. The total of just those 64 people totals over $1.1 million.
Sheriff Trevino said the lack of payment and actions of the alleged deadbeat parents are unacceptable in his book.
"I believe not paying your child support is a form of non-physical child abuse," said Trevino.
Trevino's opinion is sharp, and so is his eagerness to put non-paying parents behind bars.
"Up until 11 o'clock this morning, we have arrested 12 of them. ten males and two females. we are going to continue with the operation for the next couple of days," said Trevino.
If you believe you will be late on your next child support payment. Rolfe said to call ahead to the Attorney Generals office and let them know. They may be able to work out a solution.
