President Barack Obama wins a second term, defeating GOP challenger Mitt Romney.
President Obama has secured a second term after victories in several key battleground states.
Mr. Obama thanked a jubilant Chicago crowd early Wednesday morning shortly after his opponent, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, conceded defeat.
"Tonight in this election you the American people reminded us that while road was hard, while journey was long we have picked ourselves up, fought our way back, and know in our hearts that for usa best is yet to come," the president said.
His democratic majority in the Senate was strengthened, but the house remains in Republican control, and big battles loom just ahead.
He also promised to work with leaders of both parties, including his defeated opponent Mitt Romney, to plot a path forward for the nation.
